Northern Marianas College (NMC) has announced that the Spring 2026 term is ending early in response to the ongoing recovery from Super Typhoon Sinlaku. This student-centered approach, developed by the College’s Academic Programs and Services (APS), aims to uphold academic integrity while accommodating the devastating challenges faced by students and faculty.

“We recognize that this is an imperfect situation, and no single approach will meet every need,” said Acting Dean of Academic Programs and Services Ajani Burrell. “Our goal is to identify a solution that works for most students and instructors, while allowing for flexibility where it is needed.”

The College will implement a four-step academic completion plan:

  1. Grade Updates
Instructors will update student grades in NMC Online (Moodle) through Week 12 (April 6–12) by 12:00 p.m. on Friday, May 1, 2026. Students will be notified that grades have been updated by 5:00 p.m. the same day.
  2. Option to Improve Grades (“I-Route”)
Students will have until 5:00 p.m. on Friday, May 15, 2026 to formally request an Incomplete (“I”) from their instructors via email. This will allow students the possibility to improve their grade. Those who receive an “I” will have up to six months to complete pending coursework assigned by their instructor.
  3. Final Grades for Non-Participants
Students who do not select the “I-Route” by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, May 15, 2026 will receive their updated grade as their final grade for the semester. Final grades will be posted in Portal+ by 5:00 p.m. on Monday, May 18, 2026.
  4. Program-Specific Requirements
While this plan serves as a general framework, some programs or courses may have specific requirements. Students will be notified directly by their instructors or departments if applicable.

College leadership emphasized that this approach is designed to balance academic standards with compassion and flexibility during this vulnerable recovery period.

“While the College remains committed to its academic mission, we recognize the realities our students and employees are facing,” NMC President Galvin Deleon Guerrero, EdD, said. “We encourage everyone to prioritize their safety, their families, and their well-being as we rebuild and recover together.”

The College leadership is working with federal and local officials to ensure that Pell Grant awards and other financial aid disbursements are not affected during this time.

Students with questions are encouraged to contact their instructor or academic advisor for further guidance. A list of “Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)” has been emailed to students.

To further support students during these challenging times, NMC has activated a dedicated student hotline: (670) 285-2059/7651 available from Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. WhatsApp messaging is an available option as well.
