Overview

About this Position

As a senior team leader, reporting directly to the OIT Director, the Systems Administrator isresponsible for the strategic direction, architecture, and management of NMC's enterprise server infrastructure. This position leads the planning, design, implementation, and operation of mission critical server systems while managing a team of Server Support Specialists. The Systems Administrator ensures the reliability, security, performance, and scalability of the College's server infrastructure to support its educational mission and strategic objectives. This role serves as the technical authority on server technologies and establishes standards, policies, and best practice for server management across the institution.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree from a U.S. Department of Education recognized accredited institution in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field; AND
  • Eight (8) years of hands-on system administration experience (preferably with the following):
    • Track record of success in higher education IT environments.
    • Certifications:
      • CompTIA
      • ITIL
      • Microsoft
      • Red Hat
      • VMware
    • Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (Microsoft Azure & 365, Google Workspace).
    • Expertise with enterprise backup solutions.
    • Experience with containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes).
    • Proficiency with configuration management platforms.
    • Progressive experience with automation, orchestration, and infrastructure as code.
    • Strong background in Linux system administration.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to translate technical concepts for non-technical audience.
  • Adept in backup, recovery, and business continuity strategies.
  • Advanced expertise in Windows Server and Linux enterprise environments.
  • Broad understanding of enterprise networking concepts and integration with server environments.

Duties & Responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participates in Program Review and Outcomes Assessment (PROA) activities.
  • Acts as the escalation point for critical server issues and leads incident response.
  • Builds comprehensive security frameworks for server environments.
  • Co-directs the Infrastructure Operations (IOps) team alongside the Network Administrator, including mentoring, performance management, and professional Development.
  • Collaborates with other IT members on cross-functional initiatives and integrated Solutions.
  • Creates and maintains a technology roadmap for server infrastructure modernization.
  • Implements the strategic vision for server infrastructure aligned with institutional goals.
  • Develops strategies for hybrid cloud adoption and implementation.
  • Designs and implements disaster recovery and business continuity strategies.
  • Ensures compliance with regulatory requirements and institutional policies.
  • Establishes and enforces technical standards, policies, and procedures for server Infrastructure.
  • Evaluates emerging technologies and recommends strategic investments.
  • Incorporates automation and orchestration strategies for operational efficiency.
  • Leads capacity planning and performance optimization for enterprise systems.
  • Manages server infrastructure budgets and resource allocations.
  • Plans and oversees complex infrastructure projects including migrations, upgrades, and technology transitions.
  • Serves as the technical advisor to the OIT Director on server and infrastructure matters.
  • Sets service level agreements and key performance indicators for server operations.
  • Spearheads the architecture and design of enterprise server systems, virtualization, storage, and cloud solutions.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Essential Functions of the Position

Must be able to frequently operate a computer and other office productivity machinery. The individual in this position will frequently communicate with students and their colleague(s) in order to exchange information in various situations. Occasionally lifts office products and supplies, weighing up to 10 Ibs.The employee may be tasked to work outdoors in the sun and heat, on or around wet surfaces, and other areas exposed to the elements.
