Northern Marianas College’s Center for Training and Innovation (NMC-CTI) and 500 Sails are inviting community members to immerse themselves in the rich heritage of Micronesian seafaring through their upcoming Basic Traditional Seamanship – Lalayak (Sailing) Certificate Program at the Cultural Maritime Training Center in Guma Sakman, Susupe.

The certificate program, scheduled to run from October 11 to October 25, 2025, offers participants the chance to learn the art of sailing a traditional Chamorro Proa. Blending cultural knowledge with hands-on practice, the program is taught by expert navigators and traditional canoe sailors. Classroom sessions will focus on sailing theory and Micronesian maritime traditions, while weekend classes will bring students onto the Saipan lagoon to hone their skills on the water.

Participants will also be required to complete 10 practice sails throughout the month of November to solidify their training and master the safe operation of these fast, ancient canoes uniquely designed for the waters of Micronesia.

Classes will be held on Tuesdays from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and on the following Saturdays:

Oct. 11: 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Oct. 18: 8:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
Oct. 25: 8:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.

The program is open to the public, but participants must be at least 16 years old. Those who are 17 and under must have parent or guardian consent. All applicants are also required to take and pass a mandatory swim test prior to the start of the program.

Space is limited, and the registration deadline is Thursday, October 9, 2025. Those interested are encouraged to sign up early by visiting: https://bit.ly/42lfvJ0.
