The latest news from Northern Marianas College

Northern Marianas College’s Center for Training and Innovation (formerly Community Development Institute), in collaboration with 500 Sails, will launch the third cohort of its immersive 8-week program on traditional navigation starting Sept. 9, 2025.

The program will explore foundational principles and hands-on skills once used by master seafarers for centuries, including navigating by stars, ocean currents, and natural signs.

Participants will also trace the history and cultural evolution of these techniques while learning to use traditional tools.

Classes will be held every Tuesday from 5 to 6 p.m., Sept. 9 to Oct. 28, 2025, at the 500 Sails Boatyard in Lower Base, Saipan. The program is open to Saipan residents ages 16 and older. Participants age 17 and under will need a parent or guardian’s consent.
